When I was researching background relevant to my book, I was shocked by the scale of people trafficking and modern slavery. The more I delved into the subject the more concerned I became.
There are a lot of amazing people working with some wonderful charities who are determined to end this blight on our society, but I was particularly impressed by Hope for Justice, who cover every aspect of people trafficking overseas and in the UK.
It is for this reason that I donate £1 from every sale of 'Dangerous Score' to Hope for Justice. I would urge everyone to join the quest to end this stain on humanity.
About modern slavery
Most people think of ‘slavery’ as something from the past – an evil institution that’s been abolished and consigned to history. Actually, more people are trapped in slavery today than any point in history.
There are tens of thousands of victims in the UK alone, trafficked into sexual exploitation, forced labour or domestic servitude.
About Hope for Justice
The charity Hope for Justice has helped hundreds of victims of trafficking, who have often been beaten and abused; others have had threats made against their families. Earnings are kept by the trafficker to pay non-existent bills for transport, housing and food.
Hope for Justice’s specialist investigators – mostly former police detectives and multilingual outreach workers – identify victims, build bridges of trust and remove them from exploitation. Once they are safe, Hope for Justice helps them access somewhere to live, specialist mental health and trauma support where necessary, plus legal assistance, employment opportunities and more.
The charity trains the police and others to spot the signs of modern slavery and respond, and also works with businesses to protect their operations and supply chains from modern slavery.
Hope for Justice depends on the support of ordinary people for fundraising, campaigning and awareness-raising about this terrible issue.
